Yes Sherlock, I agree, it's like a hotel stay that tax payers are paying for, not to meantion free education (thankyou tax payers) which for most of us get in debt for! Great system!

I can't understand why Yahoo Answers didn't tell you that this question has already been asked in the last two weeks.

We only have capital punishment in the UK for acts of arson in Her Majesty's Dock Yards - a hangover from earlier times!

Capital punishment does not deter. There is no significant difference in murder rates between those US states with the death penalty and those without. So forget that one.

Capital punishment does prevent a murderer re-offending; as would a 'life meaning life' sentence.

Those wrongly executed cannot be compensated. It's no use saying "only execute when you're 100% certain they did it" - juries should only convict when they're 100% certain, and look how many mistakes there are.

In society we need a balance between protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty. If only we could accurately distinguish between the guilty and innocent, life would be so much easier.

I don't think the death penalty is the answer. I do believe there is a criminal underclass who are so far out of society that we need to either bring them back in, or accept defeat and remove them totally.

I have had this idea for some time now that i believe could work and help crime and global poverty at the same time.

I have been to several parts of Africa and many parts are open and there are no land tensions, there are also few jobs.

- Build Prisons in Africa -

1) Take a hundred year lease on the land - pay the government
2) Get locals to build
3) Locals supply everything from toilet paper to release papers!
4) Employ locals
5) Costs CONSIDERABLY less per prisoner
6) ULTIMATE NON LETHAL DETERRANT - your going to think twice if your going to be shipped off to another country!!!!

The Capital punishment laws I believe are not strong enough. In my opinion...I think if you are convicted, they should allow 6 months to put an appeal together. Not to prove the judge didn't do something right or the light was in the eyes of 3 jurors on the end of the stand. BLAH BLAH BLAH...But to prove that the guilty party DID NOT do what they are accused of. They get 2 hours to prove there case. Then a judge decides if what they said has merit...If he decides against them, The last meal is waiting and out they go. None of this crap about appeal after appeal...Wasting our time and money. 1 appeal to prove they didn't do what they are accused of. and thats it...This is turning into a book. So i'll stop now.

One argument I'd like answering by those keen to kill each other under the guise of capital punishment...you often say it is a deterrent...if that was true, how come people still commit crimes punishable by the death sentence?
You'd think the murder rate in states with the death penalty would be non-existant......

Compare the crime rates of different countries, the countries having strict punishments have less crime rates, people feel more safe and secure. on the other hand if we abolish capital punishment then it will not only increase the crime rate but degradaion in our moral and ethic values as well.

Not sure about capital punishment - but prison should be a really harsh, unpleasant place that people never ever want to return to. No body building or martial arts lessons or law lessons in prison either, for obvious reasons!!

The law should definitely come down harder on those who commit crimes. Let us paint a little picture... Someone just killed and brutally raped your mother. Do you want the person responsible to live and possibly walk free?

I think if you commit premeditated murder you should be put to death. You ask if the law should come down harder on those that commit crime? My question is why would the law come down on anyone that did NOT commit a crime.
