It's inhumane.

I think that is a little bit harsh for the simple fact that some felons actually do straighten out their lives and not all of them are criminals who have done something that involves murder or rape, in that case if that were the situation than I think they should have a more harsh sentance and punishment but as far as say a one time drug trafficking offender than I would say no, if twice than yes, and I agree with Puffy on the different letters for the different crimes

It is simple, straightforward, dramatic, and wrong. The problems pointed out above are just the tip of the iceberg. Crime in our society is a complex problem with no good answers. Increasing the barbarity of the punishments is not going to affect much. I think we need to take a careful look at what crime is and were it comes from. There is hard data on the subject that is to politically incorrect for people to discuss. Things like the problem of drug cost vs rewards or the incidence of crime in subcultures. Until we address crime in a reasonable way it will be a major problem.

It would only be capital punishment if it were a capital F.
What about letters for actual felony so that people would know what the convict commited: S for shoplifter, J for jaywalker, TWOC for taking without owners consent, UEACL for unjustified enrichment according to common Law, BJTV Box junction traffic violation, etc

Well we used to brand criminals in the UK but that was hundreds of years ago, If you ever visit Lancaster Castle you can still see the branding place which is in the dock of the court room there. Punishment was instant them but it wasnt a deterrant. If criminals thought they would get caught, it might be but they all think they will get away with it..

"F" for felons? are you, in effect, proposing that inmates be branded "I"; detainees, "D"; suspects, "S"; acquitted, "A", and; "P" for for those paroled or pardoned? why not a prominent "Innocent" for all the rest, too?
if you're *not*, what happens to the consitutional principle of "equal protection of the laws"?
if you *are*, what about doing literal violence ("searing") to the constitutional proscription against cruel and inhuman punishment? might as well impose 'life' on all of them, regardless of the nature and gravity of the offense. (why impose different prison terms for a mere attempt, a frustrated one and a consumated one? and why parole or pardon or 'rehabilitate' felons at all?)

As long as you have an S branded into your forehead for stupid, fine.
Its been proven that such punishment doesn't work. Thats been proven now for thousands of years.
Right now, Felons have some real serious problems with finding work because they have to state on their employment application that they're felons. They can't get jobs so what do they do? they steal to feed their familys. So they go back to prison,,,the third time, they're in there for life, their kids are on welfaire, and the Mom dies an early death. The kids, who now have no role model grow up on the street, they get into trouble,,and the horrible cycle repeats itself.

It suggests that once a crime has been committed it is impossible for someone to redeem themselves. This is more likely to encourage reoffence and is unlikely to deter most criminals. I think the idea is needless mutilation and not an effective punishment.

I think it's retarded. You have no idea how easy it is to commit a felony. People can change and learn from stupidity. But you'll never get something like an F on your forehead to go away.

It's only capital punishment if the searing kills the criminal. What it is is CORPORAL punishment, and I'd be all for it when it comes to violent crimes, drug dealing, sexual crimes, and bilking people. We are MUCH too soft on criminals!
