There's no answer to the question. That's the point! It's fun for the citizens of Springfields in different states to think the Simpsons are from their town. The idea was to make the family more realistic because many American families can find much in common with the Simpsons.
There is a series where they show a map with the crossed out states which the Simpsons are forbidden to visit because of the harm they've caused. There are about only 2 states left uncrossed. Don't remember which. Find the series and watch. But still, I doubt you'll find the answer there.

They never say, but i do know theres a Springfield in the Massachusetts area and if its anything like the rest of the MA area i saw whilst over there recently its far nicer than the Springfield in the Simpsons.

They never tell you. Apparently they picked the name Springfield as it's the most common American town name, so that no-one could point the finger and say it was based on a specific place.

They've never told you, I've always thought it was on the east coast because they said in one highway "let's go home" and went on a highway that's only running down in the east coast.

the theory is oregon... matt groenig (sp?) is from oregon and alot of people think that he modeled it after the town near Eugene... there are lots of similarities and name similarities (street/people names) between the show and the town.... but he's never really said that i know of
