Definitely, and to those whom are least 'Knightly' of our society, making the whole system a farce and a knighthood not really worth the train ticket to go and get it! Want to buy one? Pay Tony enough and he'll sort it!
I turned mine down, told them: NO.....Sir jester sounds silly anyway, don't you think?

Unfortunately the idea of 'titles' has been taken over by the 'Cosmetic Politics Brigade' - titles for favours, titles to make the working class feel they are included by giving the school cleaning lady of 50 years an outmoded British Empire Medal, titles for the riches of political retirement from the House of Commons up to the House of Lords.
Oddly it doesn't seem to matter what you have or haven't achieved, political engrandisement via titles applies to all - Sir Neil and Lady Kinnock - a failure by all accounts with a wife who now participates in that gravy train called the European Union with absolutely no previous direct political experience!
I asked a similar question the other day - do we need 'titles' any more in the 'House of Lords' - why not call it the 'Senior House of Parliament' and elect people to it who have skills, abilities and above all character to look after our interests just like an insurance against that bleating, bawling lot in the House of Commons.

Until, about twenty years ago, knighthoods were given to someone who had done something`exceptional` It was an honour to be given one. These days they appear to be quite worthless. They are given to `lovey` film actors and pop singers and old mates who have done someone in government a favour.I used to accept this with the thought that, at least most of them earned excessive salaries so they paid a great deal of income tax to the country..Then we have the likes of Antony Hopkins, who takes his title, and promptly becomes an American citizen, and pays his tax to them.
M.Ps` get a knighthood when they retire after 25 years in Parliament. No one should receive a title for doing their job, they are paid to do it. As for Kelly Holmes I agree, she did something once, Steve Redgrave deserved his, what was it four Olympic games he competed in? That is something to be proud of. The government should be more selective in these issues. It is time to cease this archaic practise.

Not so much shelled as bought. Recent example. Philip Green, owns many of the UK big stores, lives in Monaco, pays fu ck all in tax, yet he gets knighted.
That's crookery for you, brown envelopes to Ministers, and not all of it going to the party coffers, and in return a knighthood.
Come the revolution, as in Paris, a knighthood gets your head off.

I totally agree with you!!! Look at the likes of Kelly Holmes, what was that about? Ok she acheived alot, but knighthoods are given out far too easily! People should be given them for life achievements etc.

Blair has corrupted the system. There has to be a form of award for people who do good. It should however be a committe not the Prime Minister who decides.

yes, but there are also some poeple who dont get what they should have, eg Jamie Oliver should have become a knight, he has potentially started something that could save a generation of potential heart attack victims by reforming the school dinners. AMAZING GUY! So why isnt he a knight and people like Tom Jones become Sir Tom Jones...for what??!!

yes, knoghthoods should go to normal citizens that do right by there country and members of the public for example
1. Doctors, nurses or members of the public who save lives
2. Hero soldiers fighting for our country
3. Firefighters
Not actors, not singers, not comedians. What have they done for us apart from make millions.

Oh not at all, peas are not that expensive. And in any case if they were I think you might well prefer the peas as they are the healthier option
