First thing they need to do is speak to their mortgage company. Often in special circumstances they will allow 'holiday's if someone has been good at making payments previously. Another alternative is to re-mortgage and possibly extend the mortgage to release cash. Mortgage payments would higher and take longer to pay off but the cash raised would pay this for a while. Have they spoken to benefits agency, after first 6 months, if they are eligible, government will pay interest part of mortgage - not sure how long for tho. They could also speak to Citizen's Advice Bureau who deal with this sort of thing every day. Do they have a spare room that they could rent out short term at least. Read up on rent a room scheme on the internet. Could give them a tax free income, albeit only about 3k but still a help.
