First of all dont get the sempron get yourself Amd Athlon 64 bit probably with a am2 or am2+ or am3 socket. But the CPU isnt that important for gaming. The ram and graphic card is.You need at least 1 gb of ram and 256 mb graphic card to play games today.Well about the sockets: socket A was for the old athlon the 32 bit ones and 754 was for the old semprons 32 bit ones. The 939 socket is for the new Amd athlon or opteron the 64 bit ones, but now even this sockets the 939 are getting old so they replaced this sockets with am2,am2+ and am3 sockets. The am3 sockets are not out yet but they will be soon.So for your gaming rig stick to Athlon and not Sempron or get your self and intel core duo. Here go to (www.amd.com)and find out all about the sockets and Cpus

AMD Sempron CPU's are really good processors. I would also suggest that you rather go for the Athlon processor though. For me the benifit of using AMD is that you have an all rounded system which is capable of doing whatever you want when you want it.

For games, definitly AMD. It runs cooler under strain.

Pros: Priced Right
Cool and Quite

Con: Newer processors are entering the market. (AMD AM2)

The old Sempron used the 754 pin socket and the new AMD AM2 Sempron uses the 940 pin socket. Watch out for that.

Newer Boards use the 939 and 940 pin sockets.

I enjoy the fact that the first guy recommended you get a motherboard with the AM3 socket. (Not going to be released until 2008). Anyway Semprons are like Celerons, they are the low end processors of the company. The 3100+ is a little faster than a 2800+ as is indicated by the numbering. If you are planning on a gaming computer you really need to step up to either and Athlon or one of Intels Core 2 Duos. For Athlon you need socket AM2 (it supports DDR2 memory) and for Core 2 Duo you need socket LGA 775.
