THE PEAKZ

THE PEAKZ are: Rich Eardley - Bass/Vox/Stylaphone

ED Oleszko - Guitar/Vox

Deian Elfryn (alias Dayton Black) – Drums/Percussion

THE PEAKZ debut album ‘Songs for lovers and liars‘

The story of the recording of Cardiff based, punk pop band, THE PEAKZ’s debut album, reads like the script to a Hollywood film!

It’s rammed full of bizarre plot twists, action, violence, robbery, fire and welsh organic mud!

Yet unlike all the L.A. make-believe, the events in this story are ALL TRUE.

THE PEAKZ began life as Melys Bass player Rich Eardley gathering some friends to record a few demos for £50 at a local studio. This Demo of ‘Conwy Valley Love Song’ was picked up and played numerous times by the late, great, John Peel.

Out of the success of this demo a band began to take shape, former Metamorffic front man ED OLESZKO was drafted to share the vocals and add his unique tight, loud, guitar sound to the proceedings, and drummer extraordinaire Deian Elfryn, who in Birmigham has the superhero alias Dayton Black, fills the drum stool.

After loads of jamming and playing mad crazy gigs, THE PEAKZ decided on recording a debut album.

THE PEAKZ were originally set to record in December 2004, the studio time was booked, the songs were down, dusted and rehearsed, and the guitar strings all polished.

Rich and Ed were set to travel up from Cardiff to the studio in North Wales where maverick producer/Drummer Geraint Jones (Melys, Topper, Super Furry Animals among others) was to complete the line up. Since then Deian has stepped in with his sticks.

The plan was to record the album from live takes capturing the raw energy and verve of the punk like trio, then overdub further guitars and vocals where necessary, to add the final magic.

The phone goes: It’s the police!

Rich’s car full of his gear has been found burnt out on the rough side of the city, apparently the result of joyriding kids. The cops can’t trace them, it’s just another statistic.

With no other transport, and not enough money to hire a van the recording is unfortunately put on hold.

Fast forward five months to Easter 2005, and the band now have decamped to Nant –Y-Benglog Studio’s in the heart of Snowdonia where ex-Gorky’s Zykotic Monkey, John Lawrence is to engineer the recording of the album, with the whole band producing such is their strong gang like mentality.

In this short few months the band’s main songwriters, Rich and ED have taken the chance to pen a few more pop tunes in their own unique punk/pop/darkly twisted yet infused with a dark sense of humour style.

These new tunes, along with their old set form the backbone of the eleven songs the band record, mix and master in just two weeks.

The recording was based around the raw energy of live takes, with ED and Rich then adding layers of fx laden melodic guitars and vocal harmonies, all the while trying not to stepping the organic mud and compost brought into the studio by John, who wanted to give the album an original organic overtone.

Mixed live and raw by Gez Jones, the album is pure Buzzcocks punk pop meets Joy Division melancholy with the energy and catchy pop hooks of the Pistols.

The track listing for the album ‘Songs for lovers and liars’ is as follows;

1. Follow me

2. Mischief on the Holyhead road

3. They say you know me

4. The Antidote

5. The Girl you have to see to believe

6. Stalker

7. 3am

8. Conwy Valley love song

9. Freeway in Texas

10. Potters wheel

11. Lazy hazy Sci-fi daze

I don`t really know why people get so precious over it. We are all getting mixed together somewhere down the line. There`s over a million Scots living in England, Many thousands of Welsh, many thousands of English living in Scotland and quite a few English living in Wales. The Welsh marry English, Scots marry English, Welsh marry Scots and so on... One of my Grandfathers was Welsh, it is fairly likely that somewhere down the line i have got a Scottish ancestor. We all live on a small island, we are (so called) civilised and there are more important things to worry about in the world. I`m finding all this independence stuff tiresome.
