Harley is a Harley D bike highly prized by its owner and loved more than their spouse. It is lusted after by those that havent enough money to buy one or refuse to go into debt at a cost higher than the home they bought. Usually you will see middle aged men or older riding them. Not sure if this is because they have a little more money now that they are older or they are going thru a midlife crisis and the bike is their new mistress.
A Harley is "chick" bait. This could be another reason for paying mass amounts of money to own one. You will see Harley's in herds. They tend to migrate in number.
A chopper is a bike that has been "cut down". This causes the rider to lean back or forward when operating it. Sometimes the handlebars are real high. Sometmes real low. Sometimes the body of the bike is elongated. The owners will usually have a bandana on their head and questionable patches all over their black leather jackets. This gives them the "bad boy" look. This style is also "chick" bait. They, too, tend to migrate in number and you will see their bikes parked together even if they don't know each other.
Sorry all. Just had to write a blurb. Couldn't resist.
Actually, the Harley is the best sounding, best riding, finest motorcyle on the road and the Choppers are a work of art. Heads turn wherever they are. And some of the paint jobs on these bikes are absolutely amazing. Ride on folks. m

Choppers are a custom bike. Sometimes a Harley is customized into a chopper, but any bike can be turned into a chopper. Parts are modified, removed, chopped down, etc. It generally has a v-twin engine, low seat and a modified exhaust. You may be confusing the terms chopper and cruiser. Most of the Harleys on the road are not choppers, but cruisers.

Some Harleys are choppers, but most are cruisers. Not all choppers are Harleys. The term "chopper" comes from when bikers would chop their fork legs off and weld on longer ones so their front wheels stuck WAAAY out.

Harley Screamin' Eagle? Cruiser, not chopper.
Gold Wing? Cruiser.
Triumph Speed Triple? Standard.
Easy Rider? Choppers.

Make sense?

Any brand of motorcycle can be chopped. Harley Davidson is the preferred choice though.

A fine example of a chopper is the Harley that Peter Fonda rode in the classic biker flick " Easy Rider".

One of the coolest choppers I ever saw was a 1969 Honda 350 cc. Yes it was small and yes it was a jap bike but it had pipes extending and going up as tal as the sissy bar and he had the frone end extended and ape hangers. This was in 1972 and I have not seen one like it since.

The term "BOBBER" came into use after WWII, when returning servicemen bought war surplus Harley's/Indians. They would remove anything unnecessary to reduce weight, for racing purposes. They also removed the rear part of the hinged rear fender at the hinge, then weld the end piece back on, or "BOB" the fender. Extended fork legs came about so they wouldn't scrape the floorboards during cornering.
The "CHOPPER"s of the 60's/70's evolved from this. Basically, a "CHOPPER" is a bike taken apart, and "chopped up" to get the look wanted.
A "CUSTOM" is what you see on the Discovery Channel, with OCC, West Coast Choppers, etc, where it is built from the ground up.

The definition of a chopper. Means to chop or make the front forks, shocks longer, causing the bike to have a longer rake front end.

The original choppers were just modified bikes of all brands with an extended from fork.

In todays market, most of the new choppers have everything from extended front ends to big block car engines in them, called the Boss Hoss.

Harley is a brand name. Any motorcycle can be chopped, i.e. parts taken off and parts put on. For a motorcycle to be called a chopper it must have a certain "look". A motorcycle can start of stock and then be chopped, or more commonly these days, they are made from scratch to look more like a chopped motorcycle of the past.
