My Mom always used one on us. In fact if one broke, we used to play with the mercury inside. Was not aware of any dangers at that time. I had always used one when my children were growing up, and it worked just find. Other than having to practically have to shake your arm off to get the mercury to subside prior to using it. I did in fact just get a digital thermometer a couple of years back. And they did say you should not thow your old mercury one away, due to the EPA problem it would cause to the enviorment. But the only drugstores that were taking them back were not in my general area. An I will be Dam-- if I was going to travel for miles and miles just to get rid of a stupid thermometer. I would have to look again, to see If I did just throw it away or if it still is in my cabinet.

leave the thermometer in your mouth until the mercury is stable like its not goin up or down, then thats the correct reading,..
