Yes. Some kids these days drink it. They can buy NyQuil over the counter and it is 10% alcohol. Which is like 10 or 20 proof (something like that). So they think they have found a way around the liquor laws.
Also, prescription cough syrups have codiene, hydrocodone or oxycodone in them. This is a similar compound to heroin.
Good to be an informed parent. A close relationship with your son or daughter is the best anti-drug...

There are many ways to have reactions from cough syrups- the most common ways are through allergies and overdoses. Allergies can be from not only the medical ingredients, but even the colourings and sweeteners and that are used. Sometimes these reactions can take the form of hyper-activity or tremors and could be mistaken for a high.
Even with child-proof bottles, why risk it? Keep all meds in a locked case out of the eyes and reach of your children, young or old. And keep two sets of keys in defferent places. If it still worries you, do not purchase syrups, stick to alternative methods to soothe the throat such as steam. There is potential evidence that syrups may not be effective anyways, .
Unfortunately if you mean you are worried about intentional abuse, many household products can be used for intoxication. There are going to be many things to tempt your child everyday through life and teaching them to properly use these substances and respect themselves is essential. It's important to keep an open dialogue with your kids. Even from a young age tell them the honest and dangerous consequences of drug abuse so there is no mystique to experiment.

Yes---dextromethorphan (often called DXM) can produce a 'high' if comsumed in large quanities. Drinking a lot of cough syrup (2-3 bottles), or taking DXM in pill form, has become a rampant form of drug abuse in some regions of the world. Many kids are willing to try it b/c since it's "just cough medicine", they think it isn't that harmful. But in kids who are already depressed, it can become addictive, and purposeful o.d.-ing can cause death.

*chuckles* From about 1200 AD to around 1970, this was a problem. Codine was quite common in cough syrup during this time.
However, such cough syrup is now a prescription drug item only, and is somewhat difficult to get in this day and age, so don't worry

Do you mean Robitussin? Because that has a whole cult following of druggies. DXM should really be banned. That stuff is worse than acid. People actually order this stuff by bulk from overseas. It's pretty easy to catch though. Your kid will be moving around very "mechanically" and the look on their face will be tense, almost dead looking. It's a look that you never forget. You can't fake it when your on that ****. Oh and if you see your kid with a bunch of red "candies" check them. They might be triple cs. (coricidin cold and cough) People actually eat those like they're regular candy no problem. It's not like the syrup.

Not if you keep to the recommended dose, I once overdosed on cough syrup because I thought it had no effect, it sent my blood pressure very low and I passed out.

Yeah when using Robotussin it's reffered to as Robo'in or Robo-frying, and the meaning is quite literal too. It basically fries holes in the brain. Another thing to watch out for is a medication called Coricidin it contains a chemical compound called DXM which when induced in excess of the recommended amount causes similar effects like acid. The long term side affects of these types of highs are mild to moderate brain damage, and in some severe cases major brain damage, heart mumors, heart attack, seizures, liver failure and death. Please speak to your child or children and their friends parents. Even one pill given to the wrong child can be fatal.

Hi there !
Yes...but not all ! Some people ae habituated to some brands too..because of the composition !
I think it is due to the ingredient "codeine" and "diphenylhydramine " ?
Relaxx.. When your consultant prescribes cough syrup, tell him that you dont want such a brand..
Best wishes !
