Is there a NEED for Islam, or Christianity for the natives deep in the jungles of the Amazon; or in a socialist state which forbids the worship of any of the established world religions? Religious head authorities will of course insist on a society to be based on a foundation of religious beliefs/worship... but how essential, how pertinent are they in the light of current world scenario.

I am not sure about a "need" for religion, but I think there should always be a place for it.
With the way governments are now, religion may be the only thing that keeps so,e people from killing themselves and others out of frustration, and dissent.

Some people are not content without some form of answer to the questions we ask ourselves about who we are and where we came from. Even the natives deep in the jungles of the Amazon have some form of God. Whether it is a medicine man or mythical figure, many people need an icon to establish spirituality.

After prostitution, religious leaders are the oldest profession. Religion of any type is one of the binding factors of a group, village, state or nation. Points all in the same direction so to speak. As society advances counter religious thought is allowed , in most cases.

Religion is quite a serious topic. However my answer to your question is YES and NO. On one hand if there were no religious beliefs in this world there would be apeaceful society(Eg: World trade center incident). But there would also be no culture!!
many religions are the founding stone of culture. Eg: In Hinduism temples etc are a great rep. of architecture.

Look ,religion is about your inner belief in the Creator( call it god or allah or buda or anything else).Once you believe then the rest is automatic .If there is a creator who have so much power that he can destroy or reward you then you have to introduce his will in anything you do be it nation building or any other.Problems always come from those who claim that they know the creator more than you do and try to impose their ideas on you by force.
