You can never know what is going on in anyone's head - even the people you live with. So on those terms, you can not trust anyone. However you can't lead a happy life if you are continually suspicious. So you have to allow some credibility to other people. The internet provides more potential for deception, so it is advisable to be wary. I met the woman of my dreams on the internet - she seemed too good to be true, but nevertheless she is true. On the other hand, I have met a lot of scheming, backstabbing, callous individuals face-to-face, and suffered as a result. I would say that the lesson is to be emotionally prepared for betrayal, and have the strength and knowledge to be able to carry on without the deceiver in your life.
