Do you think he was cheating by using the pine tar, or do you think it is sometimes necessary considering the weather?

Just to comment on the 60 to 70 percent use pine tar...60 to 70 percent use steroids...that doesn't make it right...even if you wipe the pine tar off your hands...there is still enough residue to make a difference

Just because some over zealous media person showed on TV that it appeared that there was a substance or dirt on Kenny Rogers hand, doesn't mean it was anything BUT dirt. The fact that the so called substance may have been removed and the fact that he STILL pitched out of his mind proves it was probably nothing!

No one will ever know for sure. I still maintain that is anyone naive enough to think that Rogers (or the Tigers) would be THAT stupid in a game of that magnitude to risk using pine tar?

Sometimes bad sports have to dwell on the (media hyped) negative to make it look like they are being a good fan to their own team. It's a good excuse when your team loses. Be proud for what they have accomplished and don't be a politican and bad mouth your opponent.

GO TIGERS! I'm proud of you and thank you no matter happens!!!

I think he may have been cheating, but that's not going to change the fact that the series is now tied.

What makes me believe he cheated is two things - first, that didn't look at all like dirt, and it looked an awful lot like a thin film of pine tar. Secondly, he, Leyland and the ump seem to be telling different stories today about what happened.

It's a bit of a black eye on a sport that already has enough, but hopefully it passes soon enough that we can enjoy the rest of what should be a good series.

Edit - The fact that Rogers had a similar substance on his hand during Game 3 of the ALCS doesn't help his argument.

No, he is not a cheater. Even after the substance whatever was on his hand was washed off, he still pitched an incredible game to even the series for the Tigers. This is the greatest modern era scoreless streaks anyone has had. I dont know if you listened to a few of the analysts but they asked some other pitchers and one even said that 60 to 70 percent use pine tar in a season or over their career. The only reason they are talking about it now because its the World Series and the stage is much bigger.

Yes. And i hate how Detroit fans are saying he wasn't and if he was they would have kicked him out of the game....BS. if he didn't have anythin illegal on his hand then tell me why did he clean it or wash it before the next inning? And why would he grab his cap over and over from the back and front of it. How does he strike out so many people now, when he hes like 50 and hes not even a power pitcher? i mean please, its like when bonds head got 10 times bigger than anyone Else's and people still said "its natural" "he works out, its not steroids" are you that blind? look at how small his body was when he was with Pit., everyone knows he cheated but were not doing any thing about it as well as we all saw Rogers cheating and again we wont do anythin about it. He should have been rocked by Puljos with a home run in the 6th inning i believe(not sure what inning it was when he hit that hard ball to left Field). But what can i do right? just watch the cheaters get away with things like this because they can.
Ohh and im not a Cards fan so dont think im mad cuz im pulling for them. It gets me mad when you got alot of players playing the right way, practicing for hours to be the best. And you got these chums using illegal things to make it easier for them to succeed or make a name for them when they dont deserve it.

If he was indeed using pine tar than he is a cheater. Without absolute proof, I will not accuse him of cheating. Despite the weather being wet and cold, that is no excuse for cheating if that is what happened.

i do no longer understand. it somewhat is oftentimes the media's fault for hyping stuff like this. this is an imprecise rule. Pine tar isn't a huge deal. It supplies a sprint grip and probably a sprint spin on breaking balls. It has little or no result on fastballs. Many pitchers do it, even although they "shouldn't". BTW, having pine tar isn't an instantaneous ten interest ban. of their discretion, the umpires can furnish a warning. this could have been what surpassed off and Rogers did no longer decide to confess on national television that he "cheated". as a results of fact the Cardinal's gamers/supervisor did no longer call him a cheater, confronted with the situation, there is not any reason for all of us else to declare so. The umpires dealt with it nicely under the regulations and that's that.

I think if you arent cheating ur not trying to win...i mean thats the best way i can put it. Advantages are advantages...i pitched for 16 yrs (throughout college and lil past) and there were very very few pitchers I met that didnt try and get their edge one way or another. Same as hitters, same as anyone else who is competitive. But how come you keep forgetting that he had "pinetar" on his hand for 1 inning out of his 8 scoreless, that leaves 7 innings to do something off him and they didnt. Pine tar or not, he was gonna shut the Cards down, as he did...

I don't think he's a "cheater" but I think he did break the rules. Maybe MLB should reconsider the rule for extremely cold weather.

He still pitched great, without the pine tar!

GO TIGERS!!!!!

No, but it is hard to say. I hear that a lot of pitchers use pine tar when they shouldn't. So he may have. In cold weather, pitchers also use legal sticky substances to pitch effectively. It may have been that too.

Still, he pitched a great game regardless.
