Saving Private Ryan is a great war movie. Lots of amazing action and a great story.
Apocalypse Now is another great war film.
Passion of the Christ is really intense, and an amazing story. Highly suggest you check it out.
Lord of the Rings is a great fantasy "trilogy." But if you can get into it in the first hour or so, watch the whole three movies. If not, don't force yourself to watch the rest, you won't like them.
The Ten Commandments (1957, I think) The one with Charleton Heston is just great. A really great adaptation of the Books of Exodus and Leviticus. Also watch the 1923 original silent version
also by Cecil B. DeMille if you want. It's another good adaptation of the Books, and actually pretty good for 1923.
The original Star Wars trilogy is alright. Kinda hokey, but good for some entertainment.
Forrest Gump is the classic American movie. (Even though I'm through and through Canadian, I love this one)
Around Christmas, you HAVE to watch A Christmas Story. Came out in ~1983. It is freaking hilarious. A total classic.

I would say go to http://www.imdb.com and look for what you are interested in. There are so many genres that you can go into - it really depends what you like. Here are a few of my favs:
Grosse Pointe Blank
Love Actually
Pushing Tin
Moulin Rouge
Ten Things I Hate About You
Chicago
Phantom of the Opera
Scent of a Woman
Return to Me
Beaches
The list could go on and on - I own over 500 movies on dvd/vhs. LOL

"Talking to heaven" It was great my girlfriend rented it and i thought it would be a bore. Its a little long but believe me it is worth the time. If you are in to psychics, suspense, murder and mystery this will be great. Its not gross either like full of blood and guts. Hope you will take the time to watch it.
