In my experience it can range between £20 and £60 depending on if your working direct or through an agency. As other will also tell you it also depends how good you are your level of experience.
Regardless it pays better than the jobs I've had to take to pay the mortgage during bad times.
If you're the customer you don't mention the scale of the website so as an example of extremes you could pay anything from £150 for simple site to £75,000 and up.
As in all things get several quotes. You should also spend time to think about a what it is you want from your website and set this out in a brief.
I know clients who have wasted £££ because they have not thought through what they want or have commissioned inexperienced designers.
Best of luck

It changes massively dependent on how good you are (how others perceive you rather than how you perceive yourself) and how experienced you are in the business. It also depends on who your client is - if you get repeat business from an agency, some designers reduce their hourly rate so as to guarantee repeat business.
I charge £35 an hour for normal clients and £25 an hour to agencies that I've dealt with more than 3 times.
All that said, I've seen people charge as little as £15 and as much as £75...!

it varies between which design you want to get into. if you are freelancing and have an impressive portfolio you are looking of a start of £15 p/hour.
for graduates and other entry level positions, you are looking at around £9 start.
I used to do design and charged £12 p/hour but I have been out of the loop for a couple of years, so my estimates may be slightly off. Heck you are probably looking at more money....

It depends on the job you do, I may get $1000 for a website that I worked on 4 days .. and I may get $500 for a website I worked on a week .. so it's really on the style.
