It always happen this time of year. My wooden front door gets so difficult to open and I have to nearly rip my arm out from the shoulder to open it! I have used furniture polish, hair wax and even aqeuous cream down the side and this has some effect for just a day. Apart from getting a new front door, which I simply cannot afford, can anyone suggest anything please? I've also shaved down the side of the door too, but to no avail. Many thanks.

Firstly, DO NOT SHAVE ANYTHING OFF !!! When it shrinks back, you'll be left with a gap. Meanwhile, rub a candle over the part that's sticking.

Hi, you need to plane down the door a bit more. for an external door there fshould be about 1/16 inch gap all around. For an internal door a gap of 1/8 inch is OK

No product on the door will keep it free or stop it expanding. It sounds like moisture is getting into the door, if might help if you take it down and paint the top and bottom rails.

I did 2 doors on sunday, a very simple job.

If you have no friends or relatives that can help you, call a professional carpenter. You have several problems, not including getting advice from people that have nothing more than quick fixes. The major problem, quite obviously is a wood door. You should`nt have to shave and reshave. Something else is moving. Loose hinges, jamb, framing ,worn or bent hinges, too much paint build up. Have someone look at it that knows what they`re doing. Hate to see you ruin something needlessly.

every time you shave and cut and chisel your door your exposing raw wood, then when it rains or the humidity goes up the raw wood soaks up the moisture and your door swells up.I'd say your best bet is gonna be wait until it drys out alittle and take your door off the hinges and either paint or varnish the whole door including the top and bottom. this ought solve future problems. if it doesn't then spend the $2oo dollars and get a new metal door

Its probablly to do with dampness,it is the fall here in southern ontario .Thats what happens to a door that has wood on it.I have a steel door but the outside frame is wood, and it has swollen the last few years. So i sanded that side of the door last year.Any type of grease or something to make it slide better like that will only make it swell more........sand it and see if it sticks...then paint it to make sure its sealed, that should do it.....:)

check the hinges. If they are recessed into the wood, then take them out and deepen the slots they are in. To replace the door, stack a few magazines or a book to the right height to replace the screws into the same holes. If the hinges aren't recessed, draw a line around each hinge, remove them, and use a wood chisel with hammer to make a recession. First, go around the tracing with the chisel though, so you don't splinter the surrounding wood severely.

Remove the hinges, remove some wood underneath the hinges with a chisel, the hinges will sit deeper, allowing more of a gap at the closure point. Good Luck!

it might be to do with the large amount of rain at this time of year, it causes wood to swell, I have the same problem in a flat which I'm renting but we are getting the builder who fitted the door to come out and cut the side of it so that it will close easier.

Spray some WD40 over the hinges that may help.
