Have an experienced mechanic look at it. It might just need to have the rings replaced.

Did it sit for a while or did the engine have oil in it when you bought it. Either way the rings are shot. The rings are the o rings around the piston they hold the oil below the piston as it travels up & down the cylinder. If they are shot that bad you are not only looking at an engine head removal but also probably complete soaking head & block to get all the burnt crud out of the passages & valves & other nooks.
If you dont care if the car runs but a couple of more months if that. Buy some really good engine stop leak & ATF refill the oil pan turn the crank pulley by hand a 6 to 8 times then let sit for a couple of hours. drive around the block or for about five minutes let idle in drive for about 5 minutes turn off & give 1 hour to cool. Change oil & filter replace with heavy weight oil 10w40 & a good filter. Good luck

Sounds like your friend has bought a donkey! If there are no visible oil leaks then all the oil is going through the cylinders in one way or another. Could be the Piston rings and valve guides are worn or the cylinder head oil ports are leaking through.
Very expensive at best.. if your friend likes the car try getting an reconditioned engine fitted but dig deep!
Good luck.

exceptionally undesirable...at the same time as you've heavily worn piston rings and the oil is blowing previous them in the course of the compression stroke and burning off. this is sluggish sufficient that you does no longer have huge plumes of smoke at the same time as using...yet sufficient the position a small volume of gray or white smoke might want to be popping out of the exhaust at the same time as using. Assuming the element replaced into topped off with 4-5 quarts on the perfect oil replace, burning a quart each and every a million,000-or-so miles is a severe loss fee. no longer catastrophic...yet very severe. Realistically, in case you you ought to operate a quart each and every a million,000 miles, your vehicle will very last for some extra years. (next time you've the oil replaced, verify the dipstick on the instantaneous to make particular that the mechanic has filled the oil to the right element.) As for the oil basic no longer drawing near...IF the vehicle certainly had in difficulty-free words one quart left in it...this is going to have come on....or a minimum of flickered throughout demanding braking or quick turns. maximum likely the plug to the oil sensor is disconnected or damaged off. this is truly basic to knock this element loose at the same time as operating below the vehicle. it would want to also be that the sensor plug that screws into the oil pan is defective. A no longer-very-easy journey...yet a cheap and straightforward fix. ultimately, operating your vehicle to the low gas basic has no longer something to do with the engine oil. It being on does no longer impression oil intake in any way.

At that rate you should be followed by a big cloud of blue smoke if the car is burning the oil.
If not look for a leak like under the car when its stopped.
I won't say anything about your friend - get a new one!

<>Sounds like the rings are bad. Have the compression tested; that will tell you right quick and it is a cheap process. If it is the rings, it may be more than the car is worth to repair.

If it was out of oil, it'll likely cost way more than it's worth to fix it.
