sleep apnea is if you stop breathing periodically during sleep. You may awaken to restart breathing up to 100 times per night.
Probably you remember nothing at all about the awakenings. However, if you sleep with someone else, your sleep partner will remember a great deal about the awakenings.

here are the signs and symptoms:

* Frequent cessation of breathing (apnea) during sleep. Your sleep partner may notice repeated silences from your side of the bed.
* Choking or gasping during sleep to get air into the lungs
* Loud snoring
* Sudden awakenings to restart breathing
* Waking up in a sweat during the night
* Feeling unrefreshed in the morning after a night’s sleep
* Headaches, sore throat, or dry mouth in the mornings after waking up
* Daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at inappropriate times, such as during driving or at work
* Lethargy
* Rapid weight gain
* Memory loss and learning difficulties
* Short attention span
* Poor judgment
* Depression
* Personality changes

Sleep apnea affects the way you breathe while you’re asleep. There can be pauses in your breathing typically between 10 to 20 seconds that occur as often as over a hundred times a night. This will in turn, shock you awake and disrupt your sleep. In more serious cases, sleep apnea can lead to more serious health issues including heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke if left untreated.

These are a few symptoms of sleep apnea:

1)Rapidly falling asleep throughout the day
2)Morning headaches
3)Memory problems and difficulty concentrating
4)Changes in personality
5)Feeling irritable or changes in personality
6)Waking up frequently to urinate
7)Having a dry mouth or a sore throat when you wake up

You may wish to look into CPAP if this problem persists. Or you could always try a few home remedies:

1)Losing weight
Overweight individuals have extra tissue at the area around their throats, which can potentially block airflow into the lungs during sleep
2)Quitting smoking
Smoking increases inflammation and fluid retention in your throat and airway
3)Reducing consumption of alcohol, sleeping pills and sedatives
These three entities are known to interfere with breathing
4)Avoiding caffeine
5)Stick to light meals
6)Sleeping regular hours
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule helps you get better quality sleepy, and episodes of apnea will gradually start to decrease.

I really hope you find this helpful. There's always a cure to every sleeping disorder!

Yes, these are typically symtoms. Do you also snore? When people hear you snore do they see you occasionally struggling to breath? Do you wake up at night more than twice during an 8 hour sleep? If so, you need to do a Google search in your geographic area using the keywords: "Sleep Apnea "your home town name" treatment". You will find a list of sleep disorder physicians. They will want to do a sleep study on you - then they will make recommendations based upon that. You might need a CPAP machine at night. They might even recommend or allow any one of 3 surgical procedures that are all quick and take place in the doctor's office (not the hospital). I had surgery for mine 5 years ago. I sleep like a baby now. 8 hours straight at night without waking. Never sleepy during the day etc....

I am not certain, but Apnea can get worse. So perhaps you had it in a milder form till now. I have never had problems till a couple years ago after surgery I was told that I had a sleep disorder. It turns out that my shallow breathing wakes me up about 26 times an hour (not all the way, just keeps me out of REM sleep). I'm also a Heroic snorer.

This is a very serious disorder, as previous answerers have indicated, and it can lead to heart problems or even death. It can also decrese your quality of life dramatically. But there is no "over the counter" treatment! You MUST see a doctor, as the only really effective treatment is a CPAP machine with a mask that you wear at night to keep your air passages open. This machine must be set to the proper pressure to be effective - too low is useless, and too high can cause different health problems that are also very, very serious. There is no way to get a machine legally without a prescription, and if you buy one on the black market, it may do you more harm than good.

I know it's tough w/o insurance, but this is actually a life-or-death matter. Go to the doctor! There are sleep specialists and sleep clinics in all cities. Explain your economic situation to them.

Could you possibly qualify for Medicaid?
