Moles are members of the family (Talpidae) of mammals in the order Insectivora that live underground, burrowing holes. Some species are aquatic or semi-aquatic. They have cylindrical bodies covered in fur with small or covered eyes; the ears are generally not visible. They feed on small invertebrate animals living under ground. Moles can be found in North America, Europe and Asia.

The family is divided into three subfamilies:

Desmaninae (desmans)
Talpinae (moles)
Uropsilinae (shrew moles)
Male moles are called boars, females are called sows. A group of moles is called a labour.

One important (NO JOKE) comment is, if you are worried about a mole on your skin, then go to a doctor preferably a dermatologist and get it checked over. I had an annoying mole which started to itch. After a few months I went to the doc and he sent me to a surgeon to have it removed. It turned out to be a melanoma, which is, in my case cancerous. I had to go into hospital shortly after and have some skin and meat removed from my arm as well as some lymphknoten (not too sure of the English word for them - but its under the arm). I have to go back for checkups every 3 months, but believe me, its worth it.!

If you are talking about the spot on the skin type - read the following.

Although the typical mole is a plain, brown spot, moles come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They can be flesh-colored, reddish-brown, medium to dark brown, or blue; vary in shape from oval to round, and be as small as a pinhead or large enough to cover an entire limb. Moles that are larger than 8 inches in diameter and present at birth are a special problem. They may need to be removed to avoid the risk of malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

The surface of a mole can be smooth or wrinkled, flat or raised. Sometimes a mole may start out flat and brown and later become slightly raised and lighter in color. Some may become raised enough that they form a small stalk and are eventually rubbed off. Others may simply disappear.

Although most moles develop by age 20, they can continue to appear until midlife. There are also certain times in your life when moles are more apt to change; for example, they're likely to become darker, larger and more numerous because of hormonal changes during adolescence and pregnancy and with the use of birth control pills.
