I was at a friends party and so I gave him a suprise by decorating his house with balloons. This friend, was a good friend of mine. So when he saw what i did, instead of saying "Thanks a lot (My name). This was the best party i ever had!" he said, " What are you doing (My name)? This is not a kids party its for 13 year olds. And 13 year old don't have balloons at parties. Balloons are the most childish things in the whole world."

After saying this, he took a pin and burst all the balloons that i made. Which was about 500. After he burst all, he turned around and shouted at me to pick up all the balloon pieces on the floor. After that i took all my stuff and ran straight home and started crying. I don't know why but i felt so sad as my hard work went to waste and now the "Friend"does not even speak to me an often insults me.What should i do? Shpuld I just give up this whole suprising people with balloons for their birthdays. I really do not know. Can you people advice me??

You seem to have a GREAT BIG HEART blowing up all those balloons for your friend.

13 is a very difficult age. Many of us at 13 do not want to be seen to be kids anymore. Many of us who enjoys things associated with kids (cartoons, balloons and so many other things), PRETEND not to like tham at that age. The idea is we want every one to notice that we are growing up , and that we are not small kids anymore.

At that age, we are at the worst stage of puberty, and in many instances we do not know what we want. At times we HATE something, and a few minutes later we LOVE it.

Forgive your friend for the way he reacted. He is going through a LOT of changes (like you).

I like balloons, even though when I was 13 I also pretended I did not.

I think balloons are great for all kinds of parties and at any age. Your friend should be thankful that you put all that hard work and effort into making all those balloons! I mean, what kind of a person does he think he is, just bursting balloons like that? I would be so happy if one of my friends made balloons for my party. I think ballons make a party more colorful and they're great for decoration. Well, maybe 500 balloons are a lot, you could have done less but that's not the point. I think it's a good idea to surprise people with balloons, but not with 500. It would be better to discuss this with your friend. Still, if he didn't like the balloons, he could have told you in a nicer way and he should be the one that should apologize. You guys should talk with each other so your problems could be solved and if he won't listen to you, then he's not worth being a friend. Maybe he is going through some changes but he should tell you the reason why he didn't like the balloons. I agree that only 1 balloon can also make a person's day so I think this is an issue that both of you need to talk about and understand each other. I hope this helped and I hope it works out! :)

I think people appreciate balloons @ parties...but 500? That's a lot too many...A small boquet of balloons is good enough (5-7 balloons w/one or two mylar balloons).

That was really rude/mean of your friend. I guess he is not really a friend if he couldn't even show gratitude and now even insults you.

Don't given up on surprising people w/balloons, just don't overdue it w/too many.

I know the original post is from 2006, but I am planning my own wedding for the summer of 2015, and my partner and I were talking about what to use as inexpensive weights for balloons. We are having a candy buffet table and will use lots of balloon bouquets as the backdrop. We were thinking we could use cans of soup wrapped in colorful plastic or foil would work, and be very inexpensive. What was even better though, and virtually free, is using river rocks or smooth stones wrapped in plastic or foil. We only need a stone or two for each bouquet if the weight is a pound or so. Enough to keep the balloons from floating away. So, we will be using the smooth stones as it is the least expensive way to go, and we are paying for the wedding ourself, without aid from parents and such.

Hello!! :o) I'm sorry that what you did was not appreciated. HOW your friend reacted to all of those balloons was inappropriate, unkind and [ironically enough] childish. He was totally out of line. He needs to GROW UP!! Don't allow his reaction to dampen your loving spirit. This 43 year old guy would be THRILLED if someone took the time to blow up 500 balloons [or even 1 balloon - for that matter] to celebrate my birthday. Have a great day!! Craig!! :o)

i think people do appreciate balloons at a party, but i think that 500 may be a tad excessive, sometimes just 1 balloon can be enough. and that friend is not worth worrying about if they didnt appreciate that you tried to do a nice thing for their birthday.
