Get a Windows XP CD (or the CD that came with your computer) and start the computer with it in your CD-ROM drive. When going through the install, delete the current partition and then create a new one to install on. This will delete everything on your PC.

With this you can monitor (and change) ALL things (including malware) which startup automatically:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
After you're sure your PC is clean: 1. Backup all your docs/mail. 2. Move all your docs to the second harddisk. 3. Make a backup with norton ghost of your C-drive.
Then, if you get big problems, you can grab back the ghost backup.
If choosing for this system: indeed, disable the Windows restore options as described by the previous person.

if you don't turn off the restore options in device manager your system will store the spyware in the back up!
right click on "my computer" then select properties the click the "system restore"tab and check "turn off system restoe" then run your anti virus program again!
I had problems with spyware. I downloaded the free Ad-Aware Antivirus program, Script trap, bit defend and bit defender for DOS and AVG it took all those programs to get rid of the spyware. Then I updated to XP sp2 and set up the firewall and now finally my comp is working good again.

Quote from user,

Avast Antivirus and Zone Alarm Pro.. both are perfect for a trouble free PC (if you use net). I used to be a big fan of AVG, but go damn their update servers are so slow (or at least, were when I switched) and there are hardly and major updates to the interface and such. Thanks god Avast is equally good, and they update (mostly adding new features) regularly."
Good luck!
