I have just had a shower pod fitted, high priced luxury shower and steam room, they said it would take 4 days we are now in the 3rd week, I can't use it because I can't get it to switch on my son got it to work after getting squirted in the eye. there is a hole in the ceiling the new vanity unit is scratched, the pump leaks and they haven't given us the certificates for the electrics which they left bare live wires in the loft and my husband had to fix them because they were a fire hazard, CAN I WITHHOLD THE MONEY?

Yes you have every right to withold payment until the job is up to standard you expected. Initially ask for the foreman/boss whoever to visit and inspect so you can explain the defects to him. If that doesnt work contact someone like trading standards or citizens advice for further info what to do.

Are you in the UK? This comes under supply of goods and services laws - they have a duty to supply goods/services which are fit for purpose which includes being SAFE which this certainly isn't. Also theres protection under contract law (even if there was no written contract) there is an assumption that they will fulfill the contract (ie for a suitable working shower) and they haven't, therefore the contract can be repudiated and you don't have to pay them till they correct it.

Have a look in the front of the phone book - you can find numbers for people like Trading Standards who can give you free advice. If you are not in the UK apologies - but there should be equivalent laws where you are. Good luck.

You need to make a formal complaint to the company who installed it and if that doesn't work, contact the Better Business Bureau and maybe get a lawyer. Your husband should not have fixed the wires as that was the company's responsibility however, I probably would have done the same thing in a pinch. Hope every thing turns out for you.

I hope you provided suitable hitching posts for the worker's horses, and provided fresh water.
Sounds like the cowboy brigade, Don't pay out until it is working satisfactorily, I would not have asked for a shilling until the job was completed to their satisfaction, as I had standards to maintain..
The shower that you have installed should bl;ow your head off, not trickle., and in fact they should guarantee to fix any problems with it for at least a year..
Its a shame that cowboys are giving the trade such a bad name : but believe me there are still dedicated men (& women) who are dedicated to their work, and want to satisfy their customers.

you have obviously lost confidence in your builder and should be denying them access to your property to avoid further bad works. you should get a surveyor round to write a report on works carried out, this helps with your safety, peace of mind and also can be used in any legal proceedings, if case goes to court you should be able to claim this expense back. you should also get quotes from other plumbers to put work right, costs to be deducted from original builders estimate. i would not rely on trading standards, they have no power and will advise you that it is a civil case to be dealt with by you, all they can do is tell you its a bad job and put the builder on a list.above all do not pay the builder and deny them access to your property, if they suspect you are not happy they may cause more damage.

I'm sure it breaches there conditions so i would hold the money until it is sorted out, take time in finding out your local trading standards phone number and give them a ring , alternatively ring their associated ombudsman and find out if you can do even more in getting this sorted. Good luck.

yes if ithe work is not to an acceptable standard ...dont pay ...go and get legal advice but dont pay until your satisfied ...dont worry if they threaten you with legal action its just a way to try to frighten you .....take pictures of all the problems ....always put your complaints in writing to the company and keep a copy of all correspondences ......

that way you will be able to prove what the problems were and what the firm was doing or not doing to correct it .......

dont let it go on for too long without seeking legal advice
