It may be a question from a non-religious person, but the true answer is a spiritual one. To realize my oneness with God.

In the meantime, the "Rules for Being Human" will give you a very good roadmap. I mean the original version, not the one with Christian tampering.

From an evolutionary point of view, you could choose to believe that we evolved from clay and chemicals - that there is no reason for our existence .. we just are. We live and then we die, and our existence is merely an accident of nature ...

On the other hand - if you do not want to go along the "religious" path, then maybe you'll consider a metaphysical theory.

If you are considering why people are born, and to what purpose, then somewhere in your subconscious you must have wondered if your being here was planned in some way and that, therefore, there must be a "design" that places you with these parents, those siblings, and with whomsoever you will ever meet in your lifetime.

If you accept that premise, then you could go on to theorise that maybe you have a purpose to influence or be influenced by given people in given situations - and that your actions/reactions are important in some way.

To build on this theory, it brings into consideration the responsibility involved in those actions and the effect they will have on a given body. And if there IS a design, then cause and effect MUST be accounted for. So - do you owe the duty of care to others? To yourself? To the Planner? Or could they all be part of the whole?

And could reincarnation be a part of this "design"? Do we come back time and time again to improve our performance - to learn humility and love for our fellow man? To "evolve" until the spirit (or essence of us) is purified enough to be perfected into a refulgence so blindingly resplendent that ......

It's a real puzzler I agree!
