My daughter brought her computer from the US and was able to use it from our line to contact her account in the States, but I do not know how she did it. So yes, it is possible. Hotels abroad seem to have terminals you can plug in your PC in too.

The problem with this is that you need to have your home base on-line all the time, this is ok until someone turns it off, or you have a power cut.
The solution is of course a virtual network, which is like a secure tunnel across the internet, works well if you are running off your own laptop, it means that you have software on both machines which kind of shake hands and your in.
Now if you are travelling without a laptop another option would be something like logmein which is a web browser based interface. You can gain access of your machine, exchange files, and operate your machine from another machine, without software being added to that machine. It's a little safer, for example if you were in an internet cafe in say Bolivia, with installed protocols anyone could take control of your machine leaving you wide open for abuse.
So try logmein it allows me to manage my mothers machine when she has difficulty, and also my computer retarded mate in Spain (I'm based in the UK).
you get full functionality trial period, then a cut down free version.

http://www.realvnc.com/
There are two programs you need for this which is available on the website above.
VNC Server installed on your PC at home.
VNC Client on the machine you work from.
You may need to use the web client which allows you to go in over internet explorer instead of having to install software on other machines.
