Or would pop music today sound no different from the way it sounds today if Britney and the Boys had not existed?

No simplistic answers such as Britney sux, or pop sux etc, please, for that would be way too easy.

Whether your answer is yes or no, I'd like your insight on how much the two abovementioned pop outfits had changed music today. Time to duck now, for I see darts! LOL.

Note: this is a music question, not a gossip or celebrity lifestyle question. And f.y.i., I listen to lounge and dark wave, not boy bands. LOL.

probably, because when you look at it there's loadsa copycats out there, like n*sync and o-town (who are rubbish). Not only that but the fact that they're still here today (10years later) has gotta mean somethin, cos most bands like them fade away after a lil bit

I don't think they "influenced" what came after them...at least not in the same way that The Beatles or the Stones influenced what came after them. I mean, Britney and Backstreet were certainly front-runners for the era of manufactured pop (for want of a better term), but I don't think their sound, or their music, was influencing others. I think their image-conciousness, and their marketing abilities would have influenced them more than their overall sound. Know what I mean?
By the way, I'm a former record company employee and part-time DJ of over 26 years. I can listen to anything with an open mind. There's nothing wrong with pop music. If it's done with enthusiasm, and you accept that it's just a pop song, there's no problem. And it's not as if Britney and Backstreet were the first pop artists. Remember New Kids On the Block? The Partridge Family? The Monkees?

Well, really, his is probably better than Britney's, at least in that it actually sounds like a person singing rather than a machine. His probably is more hated than Britney's, perhaps because of all the annoying 12 year old fan girls that come with a popular, young, attractive star like Bieber. His is worse than NSYNC or Backstreet Boys, because, yeah, they may have been a bit fluffy and stupid sometimes, but also were quite musically talented. They could all sing well, harmonized beautifully, and had appeal to more than just young girls(even my parents listened to them in their prime).

Good question. The Backstreet boys influenced N-sync and Britney influenced early X-tina as well as Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson. So yes they both have. They are also role models for millions and millions of children world wide so whatever style Britney chooses others will follow, so she is a trendsetter too. So yes they have both helped to shape a generation in that respect, but they havn't helped to reshape the face of music.

They may have been influential when they first appeared on the scene, simply because they were the best of that particular genre of music, at that time. But give it a couple of years and they won't even be remembered. Music has become such a pile of drivel (Christ, I remember laughing at my parents saying stuff like that... now I AM my parents!) over the last twenty years. I really feel sorry for kids today.

Um..yeah. They def changed things. I remember when they came out...they led a ton of other pop tarts and boy bands. Pop music was totally controlled by britney and BB wannabees.

And i don't listen to pop either. Like, at all.

I have to say no. They brought absolutely nothing new to the table, and changed absolutely nothing. Britney was exceptionally hot for a couple of years, but then again who on television wasnt?

No change.

Just more cogs in the pop wheel - if it hadn't been them, it'd have been others like them. Probably would have released the same songs, but behind different blonde-topped faces.
