Not many people ever come up with an idea that has absolutely no influences. Originality doesn't have to be that. If you have a slightly different perspective on an old idea then you have something original in the practical sense. Have you ever heard the phrase "if you can't give me something new, repackage the old so it looks new"? That's what originality is. If you can get past the stage in the creative process where you tell yourself that everything you think of is stupid and that no one will like it, you can go far. You can develop seemingly flimsy ideas pretty thoroughly if you give it time and thought.

Look outside comics and import interesting ideas from unexpected places. Look at Watchmen. That was a comic story that took crime fiction and world politics and pushed them into a Super hero form. Top Ten took tv police drama and gave it a super hero twist. Sandman took old fables, plays and classic literature and twisted a story through it. Alan Moore's swamp thing took a scientific look at re-engineering an old hero. V for Vendetta took Pink Floyd's the Wall/Nazi Germany and spun it into a super hero book.

Just take a look at the world today. There are a ton of compelling stories happening in the news. Find a way to pick those things apart and use the compelling bits to create the world in which your characters interact. The more realistic the world your characters live in, the more realistic your characters will seem in it.

Use your imagination, everyone has one, and with the field "you're" in, you've got to have one. Just remember, whatever
you're thinking about, when it comes to comedy, exaggerate it by 10, and you'll get to where you want to be. Anything you think up "is" original, just magnify it, okay?

Look at things happening around you.

OR Look at comic books you dont like and make yours better by not including things you dont like. Or include things you would change.

Be creative. Sit and think for a while. Or go for a walk and try to gain inspiration.
