It originated from the war paint on the body of the American Indians. Originally used in similar fashion and purpose, but shortly after found out that it actually helps to deflect the glares from the hot Summer Sun.

it is mostly used for the players who will be catching the ball a defensive back a wide receiver a safety a linebacker a running back or a tight end so that as they look up in the air to see the ball coming they are not blinded by the light the "no glare strip" the sun acts differently on the no glare strip than on sweat it absorbs it instead of reflecting it into the eyes making the person able to see the ball and not the sun

It's called "eye black" and it serves to reduce glare from the sun or stadium lights...

When you squint, your checks get pushed up and you can see them in your field of vision. It dulls the shine from sweat, oil, pale skin from the sun.
