Because the industry makes their pants to fit the average person -- but who in the heck is average? At least you *can* get them fixed -- think about all the tall girls on the other side of average who have to wear capris whether they want to or not.

BTW, some companies will hem your pants to the length you want for free -- Lands End does this, I think.

If the pants aren't flared, you can hem them up in an hour. Depends if your time is worth the $10.

Cos clothes are made for ridiculously tall girls. I'm pretty small, and the pants I get are at least two inches too long. Anyone who was the same size (size 6-8 Australian) and tall enough to wear those pants without taking them up would have to look like a toothpick. A thin toothpick. It's a bit silly..

Most places will charge for alterations because they either have to send it to a tailor/semstress or hire one to do and job and it costs money. That's why if you want alterations done, you've got to pay for it. Otherwise, find a shop which does alterations for free when you buy from them. I'm sure there are some shops with this service.
