The origin of prostitution, known from the third century BC, probably reach far older times. It deserves its title of the oldest profession in the world. In the very beginning, prostitution might have been a respectable occupation - there lived love priestesses in temples and the sexual intercourse between them and priests were thought to bring believers a more intense relation with God. Greek hetaeras could be already legally called prostitutes, as they took rich men’s money.
The situation changed in the Middle Ages. In fact, prostitution was not banned, but the disdainful attitude towards any corporal pleasures turned it into humiliating occupation. The Reformation formed an even stricter attitude towards prostitution for the following 100 years - houses of prostitution were closed down and prostitutes were treated as criminals. Despite the church, much harm to prostitution business was brought by syphilis. Prostitutes had to be examined every two weeks and had no right to appear publicly in daylight. Child prostitution increased - it was believed that the disease could be cured after having sex with a virgin. In the nineteenth century most of the prostitutes came from the working class, they were poor, illiterate or abandoned by their lovers. The girls were abused not only by their clients but by the police as well - prostitutes were caught in cruel round-up, money was taken from them or they were imprisoned.
Even the nowadays liberal morality has not reduced prostitution. The reason is that there have always been men who want to buy women and women who sell themselves because of economical or psychological reasons. Nor relationship with the police or mutual hierarchy have changed.
