For hiccups, I've always only done one thing, and it's worked perfectly for me:

Fill a normal-sized glass, such as an 8 oz (not a coffee cup or other shorter/smaller one) to at least halfway.

Pull a metal butterknife from your drawers (I've never tried it with plastic or something else... I don't know that it would work).

Put the spreading-end of the butterknife in the glass of water, so that the handle sticks out of the glass by a couple inches or so (the glass can't be too tall, or the knife won't stick out).

Position the glass and knife so that the knife handle presses against your forehead as you drink. Hold the knife in place as you begin to drink the water.

Drink all the water from the glass, not so fast that you choke of course... just a steady rate.

Your hiccups should be totally gone after that.

I've used that method for years, and never failed to eliminate hiccups when I get them. I can't honestly tell you what about it makes it so effective... It could be the metal of the knife as it comes into contact with the magnetic quality of your body, or it could be that you're drinking continuously for a minute, so it helps keep you from breathing (sometimes holding my breath has worked when I don't have a glass and a knife around........but it's not as quick, easy, or even effective)...

Or (and this is the most plausible to me) it could be that by having the knife in the glass, it forces your head back farther as you drink the last remaining gulps of water, and this allows your air passages to open more freely and stay open long enough to know they don't need to cause muscle contractions. I think hiccups happen when you're getting too little air, so by opening the pipes more as you tilt your head back and drink, it just allows a better flow.....

But, this is all just speculation. The only real truth in all this, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that a metal knife in a standard-sized glass is the most effective on-the-spot immediate cure for a bout of hiccups :) Try it next time! Hope it helps.

Good luck!

You've received a lot of good answers.

Where I live, there is a popular belief according to which you start to hiccup when someone talks about you. So to stop, you must think about the person that provoked your hiccups. When you guess the person guilty for your hiccup, then the hiccups will stop. At least it's more fun... than some other options!

Drinking water helps. There's this grand mother tale which I'll like to share here. It works for everyone I shared with so far.

I'll ask that person:
Q: Have you taken your meal yet?
A: Yes
Q:Are you feeling full now?
A: Yes

I had tried this on hundreds of people and it just work. The hiccups just go off. The key is that the replies must be positive. No harm trying, No side effects.

O.K. Forget the old never gonna happen cures for the annoying hiccup ! stand up straight , then bend at the waist , keeping back straight, [ you should look like a giant letter ...L ! then take a drink while keeping your back straight and guzzling your water... bend your head up as far as you can , without changing position! the airway will be blocked [ this lets in the excess air thus causing hiccups ]! try to drink as long as you can while looking at the ceiling ! this will work for you everytime ! if you position yourself right ! even if you look silly, ..who cares ? your problem is solved !

Eat one spoonful of dry sugar or else eat the contents of a sugar packet (preferably one that is generous in the amount of sugar it has). The unpleasant thing (for most) is that you cannot add water or anything else to it. You have to choke it down dry.

The granules will act on your diaphragm and stop the hiccups pretty much immediately.

Your mind is very powerful, When I have the hiccups I tell myself "I will not hiccup, I have control, I will not hiccup." This always works for me. I use this technique to boost my confidence too, if you tell yourself you can do something, you will succeed. Even if the odds are against you. I also can tell myself when to wake up. If I want to wake up a 6am I just tell myself a few times I will wake up a 6am. Also, it is good for self healing, I tell my self "I call upon all the power of my body mind and soul to heal me." It works. They use this technique with Cancer patients, they visualize the cancer cells, and command their white blood cells to attack them Also, patients with tumors visualize the tumor shrinking and it has been proven to work We use less than 10% of our brain power. Just think, what we could do if we could use even half. I learned this by reading self hypnosis books and meditating. Meditation is one of the best things you can do to open up the dormant recesses of your mind. Some people call it mind control or visualization, or hypnosis, whatever you call it, it works. good luck and
Keep in touch with yourself.

You need to get control over what is a tic in your diaphragm. To do that you need to try to hold your diaphragm as still as possible and then make it start to work right by slowly breathing in and out, counting to five for each inhalation and five for each exhalation. repeat as necessary to relax the diaphragm and the hiccups will go away.
