I don't think it is a question of rights as much as it is a question of responsability. If you want to go Christian on the issue, the bible states that we should be good stewards of the earth/world. The bible, however, doesn't really say why.
But let's get back to this responsability issue. If humans weren't here, tops of mountains wouldn't be wiped away so we can get to coal. The earth would be no place for plastic (plastic is man-made and non-biodegradable). If global warming is true and mankind is the source, if we didn't exist, all those extra greenhouse gases would not be placed into the environment.
Should we rule over the world? Perhaps a better word than "rule" would be "manage." I think/believe the earth will take care of us, if we take care of it. We can glean resources from the planet that no other animal can, and we can take care of the planet like no other animal can.
Do we have the right to rule over the world? Yes, because we are the only ones that can so by default we are stuck with ruling the world whether we want to or not, so then we have the added responsability to make sure we don't screw things up.

The world has ruled humans for the longest time. Zillion of years ago, the world ruled the dinosaurs. But over time, it got tired of its inhabitants and decided a makeover. So kaboom !!! The dinosaurs are wiped out to make way for a a major renovation of the planet. Then humans became the new occupants. The world is like a shopping mall. We are the tenants and the shoppers are our co-inhabitants; the plants, the insects, the birds, the atmosphere. If we tenants treat the shoppers like crap, we will be soon be evicted by our landlord. So do not ever believe that human rule the world. We rule nothing.

Ask yourself what it means to rule over the world. Can humans make the planet do their bidding? If we asked the planet to stop revolving, would it obey? If we asked it to stop flinging hurricanes at us, would it do it? Could we ask volcanoes to stop erupting and reasonable expect it to happen? Of course not. We don't rule earth. We divide the surface of the earth between ourselves and control (to varying extents) the people, animals, plants, and water on it. In other words, we control the fate of life and the resources the planet provides.
Should we have the right to control life and resources? I don't see why not. We need food, water, and shelter to survive. Other resources that the planet provides can be used to enrich our lives. Survival is indisputably the biggest concern of every human and things also rank high on the list of human desires (for instance, the computers we're using to communicate).
I have a feeling that the question you're getting at is whether humans have the right to exploit the planet by following the 'live for today, die tomorrow' policy of taking everything you can get your hands on, or whether they only have the right to exploit the planet by following good conservation practices that would ensure that future generations will enjoy the same lifestyles we do. My belief is that conservation is the ethical lifestyle. That is, of course, only an opinion. Either philosophy is equally valid since both are nothing more than an opinion. Though I have a feeling that my opinion is the more widely held one.

Human beings are not displaying the requisite wisdom, as of now, to earn the right to rule this world.
However, the hope is that the high level of intelligence he possesses, would eventually lead him to the level of wisdom needed to rightfully rule. Or else, there would be little left to rule over anyway.

survival of the fitest explains it all. human beings should or should not have the rights to rule over the world is not a valid question, because who else in this physical world have the abilities to compete with human beings in this category.
