I know exactly how to reset the ink level indicator on that cartridge, but it involves photos, which I cannot include so I will try to explain:

1. Remove the cartridge from your printer.
2. Place a piece of tape over the top left copper contact on the end of the cartridge (shows top contact in second row from the left on photo).
3. With the tape covering the contact, place the cartridge
back into the printer.
4. The printer will perform an alignment page.
5. Once an alignment page has been printed, remove the
cartridge from your printer.
6. Place a piece of tape over the second contact as shown in
photo (shows top contact in second row from the right).
7. Place the cartridge into your printer with both pieces of tape.
(One covering the first contact and one covering the second.)
8. The printer will print another alignment page.
9. Once the second alignment page has been printed, remove
the cartridge from your printer.
10. Remove the tape pieces from cartridge contacts. Make sure
there is no residual adhesive on the cartridge contacts.
11. Place the cartridge into your printer. Your cartridge should
now read full.

Another option is to cycle cartridges through your printer. You will need two extra cartridges and the one you refilled. First, put the refilled cartridge into the printer. Allow it to recognize the cartridge and print an alignment page. Take the cartridge out and place in the first extra cartridge. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page. Take that cartridge out and place the second extra cartridge in. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page. Take the second extra cartridge out. Place the refilled cartridge back into the printer. It will print an alignment page and then the estimated ink level will be reset to full.

The Canon printer that I have uses one color cartridge and one black cartridge. When I inquired if an ink refiller can load ink the color cartridge, I was told that they have to drill three holes in the cartridge, load the ink then reseal the holes. My Canon color cartridge has three compartments, each one containing a different basic color. To refill each compartment, they will load around 6 ml of color ink. The total capacity of the cartridge is 18 ml ( that's 3 basic color at 6 ml each ). Refill cost is 300 pesos. Just sharing an experience. My suggestions : 1. Sell your empty Canon ink cartridges. 2. Buy an EPSON printer and install a continuous ink supply system. Have a nice day !

Resetting in this manner requires three cartridges.
Label the top of each cartridge with a letter. As an example A B C.

1. "A" is in the printer (printer knows "A")
2. "A" is removed and replaced with "B" (printer knows "A" & "B")
3. "B" is removed and replaced with "C" (printer knows "B" & "C" & "A" is dropped from the list)
At this point though "A" has been in the printer, the print no longer remembers it or retains the information that it was there.

Even if you have cartridges that were repeatedly refilled and the print heads no longer work, they should be usable for resetting purposes.

Printer manufacturers place microchips in their ink cartridges purposely so that the printer recognizes whether the cartridge is new or not.

That being said, I do not recommend refilling cartridges. They are 33 times more likely to fail, they can cause serious problems to your printer, and the ink is inferior. Purchasing original manufacturer's ink is a part of life when owning and operating a printer.
