from within Yahoo Messenger (being logged onto the network)
click on Messenger > Preferences > Alerts & Sounds
scroll down the list until you see "When I receive a Message in Yahoo! Mail"
then under "Alert Me By" is 3 options,
1. Showing a Message at the bottom right corner of the screen
2. Displaying a Dialog Box
3. Play a sound, click on Browse
and navigate your way to the sound file you wish to use
click Open, click Apply, click OK when you've finished

if you wish to use the old .wav files included in v800701 (released 10 August 06) and earlier you can grab the download from...
http://www.wackyb.co.nz/option,com_remository/Itemid,3894/func,fileinfo/id,1/
instructions included with the .zip file but basically just unzip the file, copy and paste all, or just select .wav files and drop them into
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media
and overwrite when prompted :)

if you greatly dislike the new sounds or you're after a mix of old and new considering downloading and using Yahoo Sound Alerts Reset from...
http://www.wackyb.co.nz/option,com_remository/Itemid,3894/func,fileinfo/id,12/
which once run, means you can select from old (previously included .wav files) or use the new sounds for each individual user and event and you can happily download future versions of yahoo messenger without having the replace the .wav files again :)
