I would definitely practice with several rolls of practice pictures before trying to develop anything you would hate to lose!

There are a lot of books that'll show you, but there's no substitute for experience. I'd take a photo class that covers developing. It'll save you a lot of trouble.

Before attempting it by yourself, I would consider contacting a local photography club. Often they will be happy to give you advice and pointers. If you are a member, you can use the darkroom .
