Simple question, hard answer. Yes and No. Ideally, there is a system of checks and balances that prevent abuses. But the current possibility of oligarchy is getting dangerous. It is especially disturbing to me, because I believe myself to be somewhat conservative. The leadership of the republican party has failed us, but I don't support the quasi-socialist agenda of the democrats. Real rock and hard place here. In all honesty, I don't know which way to turn. You know the saying power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. We aren't to that point yet, but it is getting dangerous.
I don't believe the conspiracies and nutjobs, but I also know there are violations of power, and people are not living up to the trust we have given them. So yes, a healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing.
The two party system is beginning to fail us. I guess I don't trust our leaders, but I do trust the principles of the American Government in the Constitution.

You might as well ask the question...
Do you trust the American people?
They say it's a government by the people, for the people.
As it evolved over the years, it became a government by the rich for the rich.
The people go and vote, but the true power is contained among a few very wealthy people who dictate the economy and own our elected officials.
Sure, we can hope to get somebody in office who will fight for the rights of working people, but they have a big and powerful brick wall made of soft money (Political Action Committee money) to climb.
Mark Foley is just an odd ball.
There are others in office with less than stellar backgrounds.
Listen to the political ads on the air.
It sounds like all of them are corrupt.
The Political process became a joke on the gullible public.
Sure I'm skeptical. I see where those that are forced to work long hours get hardly a pay raise, while those who run corporations take home the cream.

how can anyone trust our government any more we the people have laid around on our collective asses and let the gov, do as it wanted to , we had warnings from our fore fathers what would happen , yet how many people have read the constitution or the bill of rights? and when they want to pass a law or bill most will "say so what it do sent affect me," so when bill doe's come along that affects you then no one wants to support you because you didn't support them, Just remember every law or bill that is passed takes freedom from some one some where, so lets all wake up and put our gov, and our laws etc where it is for the most good and stop the gov, from taking away our dwindling freedoms before we don't have any left,

The American government as a system could be trusted. It is the people in Government that are untrustworthy. Especially those that want our money because they think they can spend it better than we can.

The American government is doing its job. There are just some people who are covering up for their allies that is why some people are losing trust in the system.
