I know that salmon go up the river to there birth grounds, but why?

not all salmon die after spawning, take the steelehead for example they spawn and return to big water till temps in rivers are ideal for spawning again.now take the king (chinook),coho,they go on a four year journey and return to their birth place where they spawn and die.why, because that is their cycle!

It's just what they do. Like sea turtles. They'll lay their eggs at the beach they hatched.
I don't think we'll ever REALLY know.

its just like birds migrating, they do it because thats built into them from birth.

to spawn, they return to their place of birth to spawn

It is instinct. They go to slower water and spawn, then die.
