I don't really understand what freedom is as everyone quotes as fighting for it yet I'm sure it doesn't apply. Are we fighting for the freedom of going to work in jobs we hate? Or for the freedom of paying taxes for very little in return? Or for the freedom of being told what to do by our governments or going to jail? What is our freedom?

Well in some countries you can't ask questions like this on a forum but even so you can only ask certian questions here without them being reported. It's surely still not freedom of speech if someone can say that it's wrong.

I'm getting your points but surely we arn't fighting for freedom as that is anarchy. We are fighting for 'more freedom than some other countries'. There is no such thing as freedom in the modern world as we are all forced to do something.

The freedom we are fighting for in the Middle East right now is the freedom to have as many nukes as we want and tell everybody to go screw themselves, also the freedom to control the rest of the oil left on Earth.

I think we tend to take this conversation about freedom too broadly. The term freedom can mean many different things to many people. Here I would narrow it to the "Patrick Henry" sense.

After the attack on the USS Cole, Bin Laden was surprised that we did not immediately retaliate in a big way. Because of this he put the 9/11 attacks on the fast track.

Lets suppose for the sake of argument that we again chose not to respond. Would there have been more attacks? And if we continued to do nothing would there be more and more attacks? What would be the effect on the state of freedom in this country if a dirty bomb were used in Manhattan, or if many of them were detonated in financial centers across the US?

Of course, we would respond at some point, so these are not realistic hypotheticals, but they might help you to understand why fighting is sometimes important. This does not explain the distraction of our war in Iraq. The important thing about fighting a war is not only what you are fighting it for, but HOW you are fighting it. Are we creating more enemies with our strategy than we are destroying? Are we creating stability or instability?

There can be no doubt that the Iraq war is NOW the central front in the war on terror, but perhaps it did not need to be so. This is a policy decision we must all deal with and it is a stark reminder that policies, as well as elections , have consequences.

The freedom that they are fighting for is one of oppression from a dictatorship. It is the exact freedoms that our forefathers fought against the English for. Read our constitution.
You can quit your job if you hate it. And you pay taxes just like everyone else to fund our government and all of it's expenses. Can you see a country where there are no laws to govern people? It would be complete chaos.
You were born in this freedom. Don't criticize it, unless you can do better and change it. It still works, and has for 200+ years.

Freedom to have enough slack in the rope so that they can see what you are going to do with it. Your country cab have unauthorised wire taps and by law , torture terror 'suspects' ...
What we say here is most certainly being monitored.
Freedom to pay taxes so that bush can have the freedom to cut taxes for the rich.
Freedom to export your democracy and values to the world who don't need it. There by giving other people freedom to shoot at your young soldiers. Freedom for terrorrists the world over to aim for any and everything that is american.
And you guys think you are the only free people in the world. your privileged type freedom is limited to things like :
priests can abuse children and settle out of court.
presidents can lie and get away with it.
A lot of countries have freedom of speech. Where there cannot be wire traps without courts looking in to the matter. quitting your job is everyones right almost everywhere.
Do americans have a lot of jobs to quit nowadays??
You have the freedom to criticise BBC if they show some pictures of hurricane Katrina .

What's the President of South Korea done to upset you? 'Our' freedom is to choose the Government every four or five years. We have the freedom to mess this up too.
As for the US Constitution, people forget the President's right to veto. I suspect the US would call this a dictatorship in any other country. Not a great fan of Saddam, but it seems the Iraqi people are having a worse time now than while he was at the helm.
You can't impose a form of government on a foreign country. If you try, then you have, at the very least, to understand the complexities of that country.
We're not fighting for freedom, we're fighting to be second in command to a nation with aspirations to rule the world. Fat chance! Admit it.

The freedom your fighting for is a deception.. Our government over here in the US is using 911 to gradually turn us in to a totalitarian regime that we've fought against in 17, 41, 67, 91, and 2006. Dem's want a socialist communist country.. and Rep's want a big brother security state.. At least i can say at one time I lived in a free country. I don't know if my kid's will be able to though.

Mankind are already free people. Everyone has the right of choice. Isn't that freedom? Sometimes, people just fight because they're oppressed by something they don't like. Some fight due to greed. Some fight with motives. Never follow a fight unless unless you are sure what you're getting into.

The freedom to be American. This includes the freedom to find a job you love, to be educated about how wrong you are about "little in return," and also about the alternatives to a life of crime.

your freedom is getting to say the stupid idiotic stuff that is coming out of your mouth, your freedom is actually having a job, a house to go home to, the ability to walk the streets without fear. Since you dont believe in the freedom of our nation how about you get out you are very ungrateful and dont deserve to be here, how about you go check out another country before you have the right to say ask the question what is our freedom? My husband serves in the army to protect stupid ungrateful people like you, and if you cant stand behind out soldiers then stand in front of them.
