the BEST mosaic is St. Marc's Basilica. it is GORGEOUS!!!! one thing to remember is to wear something that covers your shoulders and no shorts that day. they are very strict that that church. from what i can remember, you are not allowed to take photographs inside the church. make sure you climb up to the balcony! it is worth the view of the square as well as a close up of some mosaics.
as far as modern... not that i found when i was there!
oh, yes, i went to ravenna once. they have gorgeous mosaics as well. there are so many beautiful mosaics in italy! they are everywhere! ok, so churches mainly... but churches are everywhere!!!

Plan a side trip down the coast toward San Marino to Ravenna, Italy. Ravenna is the Mosaic capital of the world. You could also take a workshop or take tours of the continued usage of age old techniques. Have a blast!
