try these:

-suck on ice cubes or hard candies
-gargle with warm salt water (2 tbsp salt to 8oz water)
-use a warm mist humidifier when you sleep (this will keep the air from drying out and irritating your throat)
-drink warm tea w/honey

you can also take ibuprofen for pain and swelling. take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.

Mix some salt with a glass of water and gargle it. Or you can try drinking a mug of hot cocoa and get some sleep.

warm tea with honey and lemon. Green tea is best or chammomile. ...if you are finding yourself stuffed up or congested, have a hot steamy bath.

Take care!
