The best way is to dig them out, making sure you get all the roots, and before they are spreading seeds. (So the earlier the better.) Weed killers are so risky, with pets, kids and lots of times they don't work at all or they kill your grass, too.

My mom used to give us 10 cents for each weed we pulled out. Sent all three of us kids racing around the yard to see who could get the most. It was a lot of fun. Just make sure the kids know which are weeds and which aren't.

Hi, if the weeds are in your lawn then you could use weed and feed but you must apply exactly as instructed. Broad leaf weeds can easily be removed with a long thin knife just insert next to the weed and cut round the outside if the soil carefully pulling the weed out leaving no root. If there in the path of boarder then you can use a systemic weedkiller (roundup) which when sprayed on the green leaf is taken in to the plant right down to the root but you must have green for it to work you can buy it ready made up in the sprayer from any good garden centre. Grass cutting once a fortnight should be about £15 per small garden front and back. (once a month is too long during the growing season) Hope this all helps.

Depends where your weeds are - if they are among other shrubs & flowers your best bet is to dig them out. If it is an uncultivated piece of soil - cover it with heavy black plastic for about 6 months & everything underneath it will die off. Then if you want to plant the area, use the black woven polypropelene weed suppressant (not sure how you spell that one) and plant thorough this - it allows the rain through but not light which keeps your weeds at bay. You can only use this with say, shrubs or plants that are not supposed to spread - the cover stops them from spreading.
I would say we all use far too many chemicals in our lives - makes you wonder how much more our poor old earth can take before we poison it completely!

To make pulling weeds easier, I use a long bladed old kitchen knife, insert it into the ground next to the weed root and wiggle it slightly to free the root before you pull the weed.
An environmentally friendly weed killer would be household vinegar. Spray it on the weed on a hot day. Do not get any on surrounding plants and do not drench the ground.

I'm in toronto so it may be different here, but here is my list Spindly long crawlers: Pour boiling water on the centre crabgrass. Yes we spell centre that way. ;-) Broad leaves: If you have creeping charlie, use a stiff wire rake east-west, then north-south to rip the leaves. Repeat weekly till it gives up. Deep roots: like dandelion. Hear I bow down with a tool that looks like a long metal snake tongue on the end of a wooden handle. Poke in vertical on 3 or 4 sides of the centre way deep. lift out the centre tap root. For my clay, the best helper was to airate with a tool that looks like a styrup on a long handle. It leave holds in the soil, and little dog poops on the surface. That really livened up an old lawn best.

Cutting a yard regularly helps rid it of some weeds. Others can be taken care of with a hoe.

There is no garden if there is no Gardener. So you need to work hard manually on removing the weeds on regular basis. It keeps your back healthy and provides fortuitous enjoyment.

Dig them out it is good excercise, make sure you get the root as well, then just use a hoe to keep them away.

the only way is to dig out the root, making sure that none of the root is left in the ground.
