Hostels and backpacker's lodges here are usually between $15 - $40 a night. Depends on the vicinity and cleanliness.

There are some super old "hotels" around, like there is one behind Bugis Junction, right on top of an old coffee shop. If I am not wrong, they charge $5 per bed per night. I am never adventurous to find out how good is the living condition, but I do see some backpackers coming up and down that "hotel".

The safest and the most easiest to locate would be YMCA. It's near the downtown facilities as well. It has a bus stop and a MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) station right in front.

There is also one on Carpenter Street. Can't recall the name though. The place is pretty near to downtown as well.

There are several on Dunlop Street. The street is in Little India (Serangoon Road). There's one pretty good one with a pub and live band playing, 1st floor of the hostel. It's called the Prince of Wales.

That's about all I can think of. :)

Have fun!

Start of in Thailand. Find your way to Khaosan Road Don't prebook anything just show up from the airport. Stay in Bangkok for a day or two. You will find 100's of back packers and the best deals in S.E.A. Its a blast, I spent 6 months doing Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia. Trains taxis motos boats and buses going town to town island to island every 3 days. The whole trip cost $4300 back in 2005 the Dollar is about 30% weaker since then but it is still cheap. Wish I was coming with you. best trip of my life.
