Depends on which direction your facing when your listening.
Seriously, it is the location of where the music first started.
In the early 1990s, two styles of hip hop were popular. West Coast rap was focused in Los Angeles, while East Coast rap was based out of New York City.
Southern rap (or Dirty South hip-hop) is a type of hip hop music that emerged in the late-1990s as a popular force from cities such as New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Memphis, Houston, and Dallas.

EAST COAST RAP USUALLY HAS FASTER PACED LYRICS AND MUSIC, WHERE AS WEST AND SOUTH HAS THE SLOW BEATS WITH THE BASS AND THE WORDS THAT ARE JUST REALLY SLOW.
