I ahve devoted about 90 percent of my entire life to school. I have very few friends and had no social life during grade school. During my time in highschool Iwould spend at least 12 hours a night studying or doing homework everynight. It started to affect my health during my junior year.I also picked some ba dhabits such as drinking and smoking which probably the only thing keeping me from having a full mental breakdown. Iam begining to encounter this in college. My school experiences were bad enough for me to wish that I would never remember them and I wanna stop having to rely on my addictions to deal with the stress. It is to the point of infuration with me studying that I am signifacantly more aggressive. My question is, Can one live a successful life without college or is there another way to get an education? Id rather die than to put up with this any longer. I graduated Highscholl with a 3.8 GPA and was inducted into 3 honor societies and attained the rank of Eagle in the scouts.

Amen.

I have no degree and have a great little life. It's all about what you CAN DO. There are a million idiots out there with a degree who don't know jack.

And don't think that not having a degree means manual labor either. I own and operate a successful real estate title & escrow firm and was successful in the media field before that. And of all the good people I've hired over the years, I've never given a thought to their GPA, only CAN THEY DO THIS JOB WELL AND NOT BE A JERK TO WORK WITH?

Life isn't worth living if you're gonna be miserable, my friend. Keep your head up!

Yes it is certainly possible! There is no substitute for happiness and nothing is worth being unhappy and stressed. Its not what you hang on the wall that counts (certificates) but rather how content you are during your life time. I knew of a professional couple who had studied for years to get where they were and they both realized that there was no happiness in what they were doing. They also realized that they did not have to prove any thing to the world so they gave up their professions and bought the shell of a 24 Foot caravan, did it out as a mobile hot dog stand and for 6 months of the year they attended all the sporting fixtures and they made 7 times their combined annual salary in each 6 monthly period and they did not have a care in the world either. It is far more important to have personal fulfillment than to try and convince the world that because you have a degree you are happy. The only one who can make you happy is yourself so go with whatever you like doing. I left school at a very early age and became a professional and enjoyed all the satisfaction of knowing that I made it due entirely of my own efforts. I would recommend you at least look into Supply Chain Management as a career as you can get to travel the world at the expense of the Company and make good money in the process. There are plenty of courses open and each one is usually certificated and you learn on the job. Good Luck!

Yes. College has become a business not a means of educating or preparing one for the work force. If you are spending that much time studying in high school to obtain a 3.8, you will likely discover that college will be very difficult and even more stressful. Many college students will experience a drop in their GPA by an entire point if they just study as they did in High School!
Technical school may be a lot less stressful and demanding on you. Learning a trade in which you can become a specialist in or turning your talents, skills, insight and interests towards become an entrepreneur can become a means of getting into the Good Life.
I wish I had the money I put out for college degree to invest in my ideas and talents I'd be living the Good Life instead of just getting by and not using that degree that hasn't opened the door to much of anything!

There are a number of ways. Look into those people who are innovators. A lot of them have made it big and have had little schooling. A relative became the head of BrinkerHoff Drilling (an oil company) and didn't have a college degree.

Art is an area where people can make lots of money without a lot of school.

Real Estate agents take very little schooling.

Do some research. Look into what you like to do. Your interests. If you havn't had time to have hobbies then now is time to dabble. As the saying goes "do what you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life".

Gee, it's the working world that gives me that level of stress. I sit down and read my journals form college and grad school, where I'm talking about all that studying I've got to do, and I just long for those days.

While you're still in school, take advantage of the free counseling, and get some help to build your coping skills and overcome your addictions. You're going to need to do that inside school or out.

You can live a successful life without a college degree--Bill Gates managed to scrape by even though he dropped out of Harvard. And Michael Jordon made a living without that geography degree from UNC. Research in the US suggests, though, that for the average person, every college class you take will increase your earnings even if you don't graduate.

But with or without the degree, you're going to need some marketable skills to live the good life. And you're going to have to learn to deal with different, less artificial kinds of stress than those you face in college.

It's entirely possible. I'm in university so I can relate to being stressed out. From the sound of things, you need to pick up a calming hobby (gym membership and martial arts worked for me - nothing like a good fight to let off steam). I've often asked myself if the effort is worth it and I've come to realize that it really depends on what you want to get out of life.

Do pipe welding on an oil rig and you can make a ridiculous amount of money (more than a doctor here). Work for charities and make nothing but know you help others. Money for it's own sake is worthless. You need to go out and find out what you really value in life. If you can't afford to travel, sign up with a cruise line or charity and they'll take care of it for you in return for a little hard work.

A little perspective never hurt anyone

Say, for example I say, I will be happy if I get to own a home. Then I get it. But I will start thinking, I will be happy if I get to furnish it well, then I get it. Now I think, it will be better if I get married and live here wiht my spouse. I do. Then I think, I will be happy if I have a child. God blesses me with one. Now I think, i will be happy if I give my child good education... and so on and on and on. When we start a frenzy for material possessions, we will never be happy, b'cas the human mind will always long for one thing more! But when we start feeling satisfied with whatever we have, we start feeling happy. However, you need a little to fulfil the basic necessities of life. The problem arises only when you go mad behind it. Therefore if you have a mind that says,"I am happy! This is enough", I think you can live a happy life without real material possessions

many trades such as plumbing, construction and the like require no degree and make 6 figures. maybe you should try a mix of something like civil engineering and construction equipment operation and take a break. Do not let peer /parental pressure push you into overload
