well first of all it was bacteria.. if you look at the older movies they go more into it.

The aliens thought they were immune to earth but bacteria was beyond their control.

Blood- human blood was what the roots were. the aliens released it back to the earth and it grew.

I thought it was well done even though its more one sided story then the older movies which was about like 50 people who lived through it.

The aliens come to our planet...and they breathe our air and drink our water. Remember the scene when tom cruise was in the basement? You see the aliens drink the water... Can you imagine how dirty the water that their drinking in that basement? They also drink everyother places where theres water:ponds, oceans, etc. How many different organism can there be in ONE single drop it water!!! THOUSANDS. It's really cool if you really understand the concept. We human beings evolved into creatures with immune systems which took millions of years. The aliens don't have that. The air, the water, and pretty much everything requires sometime to adapt which the aliens did not have because obviously they have been somewhere else. What about all the diseases and bacteria we contain? Can you imagine if they picked up some really dirty hooker and drank her blood(which they probably did)? Assuming that a really dirty hooker has aids, herpes, hepatitus a/b/ and c! syphalis, crabs, etc. then the aliens would of had all that in just ONE person. Im surprised they even lasted 2 hours through the movie.
The roots you say? its just blood dripping. Imagine a drop of blood on a wall. it will just look like a line. but imagine 4,5,6,7,8 drops of blood and they cross eachother.. looks like roots dont it. the blood were turning to flakes in the end because that signifies that the blood they drank is dying which means that theres alot of crap killing the rbcs. I'm very satisfied with the movie. I enjoyed it alot. Great acting/effects that was based on the plot. Not much grotesque bullcrap like hostel or something.

It was a microorganism that killed them, not specifically a bacteria. The red thing was peoples blood vessels being used to feed the aliens, I actually did like this movie, found it quite interesting and thought provoking.

while they first took off in the motor vehicle his son asked him why they have been on the returned roads and not on the throughway, and he pronounced he became attempting to conceal the reality they had a working automobile. As for the bodies floating by: particular, the tripod thingeys did blast people right into a pant of smoke, while they blasted them individually. there became entire chaos at that factor......perchance a development fell on a bus or some thing. Nitpicking? no longer in all risk, those are all sturdy factors. Watch it some greater circumstances and that i'll be you have greater questions.

Germs killed the aliens.
the red vines come form the original story, they are like blood plants. I'm fine with it. I found the begining a little too scientology. I was surprised that at Speilberg for having the machines come from the ground. That was just wrong.

they couldnt live in our world because of our atmosphere yes like bacterias and colds and things. those red things were blood from the humans they killed in the machine it looked like roots becasue the blood covered the ground and trees and things it was ok and i liked it worth watching once maybe twice but that is all not one of spieldburgs best but alright.

Bacteria oh and on another point if you look at the part when the storms start and Tom looks at his watch and it doesn't work its a 20,000 dollar rolex and he,s supposed to be a single dad with a dead-end job ??? that's confusing

well savio answered the first part, and the "red root" stuff is i THINK the humans blood and guts n stuff, since one of em was absorbed into the alien every certain amount of time, so im just assuming. And I'm SOMEWHAT satisfied with this movie; i just hated the "ending", if it can be called that.

Tom Cruise's smile killed them.
The sun reflected off his HUGE white teeth and blinded the martians.

The red stuff was Katie's nail varnish.
