Nothing really. It was a take against Jeep Wagoner, a successful american vehicle. Suzuki is partly owned by GM, Jeep's competitor.
The vehicle is sold as Opel Agila in Europe and the US.

R is for restricted. The Wagon-R was born out of Japanese kei-jido-sha restrictions which dictated a limited length and engine size. The Maruti Wagon-R is a made for India version of Suzuki Wagon-R+.
