CH3COCH3

thats 3 C, 1 O, 6 H.

3x12 + 16 + 6 x1 = 58g/mol

The molecular mass is 58. This arises from the molecular formula as follows:

CH3.CO.CH3
3 atoms of carbon = 36 (3x12)
1 atom of oxygen = 16 (1x16)
6 atoms of hydrogen = 6 (6x1)

Propanone is also commonly known as acetone.

the molecular formula of propanone is C3H80

so look up the various elements in the periodic table and note down their atomic number.
the atomic number is actually their atomic mass.

so the molecular mass = (3*12) + (8*1) + 16
= 60g

good luck with chem! :)

And PLEASE ignore cy129...the atomic number is NOT equavalent to the atomic mass!! The others have got it right.
