To distinguish is to find a unique-ness(of its independence as a unit) , despite some equivalence, and therefore in some cases where there is a reverse equivalence, we say it is contra-distinguished !

If you are interested to compare things ,, other than ,, extraterrestrials , UFO's , the soul , God , the mathematical Void (we do have a mathematical Null defination) , spirits ,, you could of course use tools of mathematics , the physics continuum (that of matter)(maybe the elementary table) , economics , statistics.
If you are interested to quantify dynamics ,, as in populations you could use the legitimate or chaos mathemetic (tha kind of weather systems).
Things ? Things always partake a domain , don't they ? And therein , calculus maybe a tool.
