Discipline is about care and control, depending on where the discipline is coming from. From an authority figure of any sorts, discipline maybe the guide you require to assist in your development and growth as a person. Is discipline is badly given or wrongly given it is to no advantage to you at all. Discipline used as a threat ultimately does not work. Discipline has to be thoroughly thought thru and discussed by both parties to understand why it is given and to what aim. It should strengthen the relationship (depending on the type to begin with) and help those being disciplined to understand their behaviour better and make the right choices further down the line.

It can be a set patten of doing things without having been motivated by others, when use it on self-discipline.
It can also be an area of study, like the discipline I am in. My first discipline is Mechanic.
It can also be use on bringing up children, a disciplined child. I discipline him last night. The teacher is disciplining the students.
What is discipline? It depends on what you are using on.

Discipline is a matter of regulated behaviour. It can be imposed from without (external). It can also be inspired from within (internal). The latter is obviously better than the former, and more difficult, as it entails a strong mind.
Discipline is the opposite of license.
I think there is no significant achievement possible without discipline of one type or the other.

Discipline is keeping in line with the laws, rules and regulations,
or habits of any community that you may be part of or visiting
temporarily. Self discipline, is as mentioned above plus a self
respect that you have imposed on yourself, of your own free
will, regarding your own behaviour and manners in all aspects
of your personal life whether on your own, or in the company
of others, known or unknown to you.

Discipline is a symbol of caring to a child. He needs guidance. If there is love, there is no such thing as being too tough with a child. A parent must also not be afraid to hang himself. If you have never been hated by your child, you have never been a parent.
Bette Davis
Without discipline, there's no life at all.

as a noun, it's the ability to exersize self-control and act in your best interest, rather than what might be more enjoyable at that time. As a verb, it refers to actions which encourage the development of discipline in others.
