heck yeah! It's really too bad that the most visible sport in the country is the one that Detroit completely blows in. by the way, you forgot U of M football and State basketball.

Detroit is a great sports town but sports capital of the world? Can't we settle for 'great sports town'? New York is a great sports town - Yankees and the Mets in playoffs, Pittsburgh is a great sports town, Chicago, too. Some are not so great: love the Dodgers for baseball tradition, the Lakers are historically a fine team but where's the football team? SF is a one trick pony, although Oakland is pretty good with the A's and hapless Raiders.
So, no, Detroit may not be the best sports capital in the world, but it is a great sports city in the US.

Not until the Lions make it to the playoffs. Now, that would be incredible.

I say Chicago is more so. 2005 World Series champs, Chicago Bulls dynasty, and now the Chicago Bears are coming back. The Blackhawks are doing well this season too. Of course, the Cubs are perennially bad, but you never know.

To the guy that said that hockey is a second tier sport, screw you, all we need now is a decent football team and we'll be the best sports city ever. I do agree that noone cares about the Shock, but now we have contenders in 3 out of the four major sports.

No points given for hosting a Super Bowl.
Most of the US considers hockey a second-tier sport, like soccer.
Shock isn't very important on the national stage.
I can't think of any other city that is competitive in two sports this year, so I'd say they are the leading sports city, not "sports capital".
