My current motherboard only supports 1.5 GB/s, and I want to get a new hard drive. Would I be able to get a 3.0 GB/s SATA drive and use it with my motherboard? That way when I upgrade my motherboard, I can get one that supports 3.0 and use the drive to its full potential. Otherwise I will have to get a 1.5 GB/s drive and when i upgrade my motherboard, it will be a waste

Yes they are fully compatbile. On some systems you will have to set a jumper on the new hard drive to make it run at the old speed, but they are all compatible.

You have to change the jumper on the hard drive. I had a similar question about it when SATA2 first came out. Tomshardware.com "FORUMZ" is a handy place where the members happily answer questions like this.

..the speeds are hyped anyway at this point in time ... i doubt you could tell the difference between a machine with 3 and one with 1.5 ... however you would notice a very large difference between a raid settup and a single drive.

western digital sells the 3.0gb ones and you can change them to 1.5 just by changing a jumper...
